It wasn't a "door" at all on the AS737. It was a door plug. Which is completely different from a plug door.
I'm still rather amazed that the company that had weight reduction as a major focus on the 777 would design something like this into aircraft that didn't need it, but would still carry all of this extra stuff around. I suppose it's part of Boeing's drive to turn manufacturing into an assembly line process from the mid 1990s.
Then again, it's really not the same Boeing.
