Exactly this. UK citizens can apply for global entry, which makes US immigration so straightforward you don't even need your passport any more. It wouldn't surprise me if that was rolled out to most UK+EU ESTA visitors over the next few years, rendering pre-clearance a complex and expensive boondoogle
