The only option was in fact to pay for a seat, which they'll let you do (but even that seems like it will take a miracle to get the right QR agent -- might be best to find an old school travel agent to try to get that done). Instead of QR J to MLE, we flew AA J to DOH and then QR Y for DOH-MLE.
