Under the Montreal Convention, the airline has liability for delay, so should be no reason not to expect Qantas to pay up for hotel/meals/incidentals. If you have travel insurance, it may be quicker and easier to claim there

I assume that you will need a hotel and to eat anyway, so rather than wait at airport trying to find out, just get to a hotel and send in bill later
