Stranded due to flight delay - course of action/compensation (urgent)

Quick question - what compensation am I allowed due to a delay?
Can I book any hotel etc? Will they cover basic expenses?

So I was going SYD to SEA via HNL.
Unforuntaely the SYD to HNL was delayed such that I'd (in thoery) miss the connection. QF automatically changed my ticket to leave HNL-SEA (by many intermediate legs and on a different airline) for tomorrow night - some 36 hrs later.

Nobody from Qantas is here at the airpot and can help, and I've been on hold for literally 2 hours to their customer service. When I do get through to Qantas customer support they don't at all undestand the situation.

Basically I just want to know if I can book a hotel and claim it back (and what their limits/requirements might be).
And if any other expenses like food and essentials are covered.

Thank you! (Writing from the floor of terminal 1 in HNL)
