You friend should be press UA to consider other carriers for displaced passengers but that is likely to be a very limited option.
He actually started this whole thing on Alaska and then bought both Hawaiian and United tickets as well to play the field.

United has been really great so far. They have numerous times tried to move him to a different airline only to have the tickets gobbled up before they could book them.

Also, he is Napa based. Thought you would like that one
