Had same issue again (I'm using up previous travel credits so have to continue with no middle name, so 016 ticket bought directly from UA.com)
phone call during T-1 check, no luck, told me to figure it out at physical check-in.
Premier access, agent and supervisor couldn't do anything. Agent did put the priority orange tag (even though the printed label didn't say priority). But priority bag is misnomer anyways
UC lounge, Scanning BP at automated gate said no access, didn't allow me toscan my *G . Didn't try scanning *G first. Went to the lounge check-in desk. This agent couldn't do anything, only manaully entered my OZ *G (so that UA gets paid for access).
Inside the lounge, the help desk spent 10mjn fixing it (unchecked me in, updated my name with middle name, re-checked me in, then it worked). Luggage didn't get lost, eventually came out at my destination.
Will check if miles get automatically posted (usually takes 1-3 days).
Basically, it's possible for someone at UA to fix it. Just don't count on being able to find that person
