I don't think it's so much that it was impossible to react as much as AA has LCC mindset leadership who cant see subfleets as a viable solution. It's the Peter Principle in effect.
I think you're being a little generous in characterizing those AA 332s as "nearly brand new". Didn't AA sell the 332s (or at least some of them) for parts?
