For further DPs re GF segments on an AP ticket, and to clarify some of the above:
- SQ WAS NOT able to print connecting GF boarding pass T-24 hours before the GF flight, but WAS able to check bags through on the GF segment (agent said her computer gave "no agreement" error message when trying to print connecting BP)
- The above also replicates my experience with OS: could check bag through but could not get BP. It seems AC is special and is uniquely able to issue GF BPs manually and through OLCI but only within T-24 of the actual GF segments.
- I WAS able to OLCI thru the GF website for SIN-BKK after flying the previous segments on ticket (website suddenly worked after my previous SQ flight departed even while still on the tarmac), so it is not a case of 014 tickets being incompatible with GF site.
- I WAS NOT able to OLCI ATH-BAH[layover]-BKK nor BKK-BAH[stop]-AUH.
If I had to try to tie it together into some rules based off my overreliance on GF in light of the scarcity of partner availability:
- Most/All *A and AP international partners can interline luggage with GF, at least OS, SQ, AC, and EY all can
- Despite checking bags through, most airlines cannot print GF BPs. AC can manually and via OLCI issue GF BPs but only T-24 of the connecting flights (may need to re-OLCI right before your Canadian flight departs to avoid only partial check-in).
- GF OLCI is seldom available, not because a ticket is necessarily 014 stock, but seems to be time-limited (within T-24), restricted for certain departing airports, ticket cannot have any "unflown" partner flights before the GF flight(s), and it seems flights to or through BAH require a manual touch (verifying VOA availability or transit exemption eligibility maybe?)
- Seats can be selected via GF website chat during Bahrain working hours. If there is an EY segment on the PNR, EY site can select GF seats (but not if no EY segment).
- To do the above, you need GF version of PNR, which you can get from AP or cowtool
- If you pay for in-flight internet (available on some but not all 787s), it gets cut over India per India law (can be a big portion of flight time)
- The 787 business class (apex suite) is really top of market for sleep purposes
- The 2-2 A321ER is the best short-haul GF config for business class, by far.
- BAH lounge is solid but gimmicky. Contract lounges elsewhere (basically everywhere except maybe LHR?) tend to be the cheapest priority pass contract lounge possible, since GF has no alliance friends. Be warned.
- BAH is a relatively tiny but exceptionally modern hub. You can transit very fast (yes business class priority line, never more than a 2 minute wait for me) and can go lounge to virtually any gate in under 5 minutes.
- I wouldn't go out of the way to fly GF, but it offers a solid product
