Anyway, later in the day I tried again without bothering to enter any FF details and I was successfully taken to the payment page and I have my reservations for a week in Bali in the new year. I'll go visit the Thai ticketing office in Bangkok at some point in December and get them to add our TK FF numbers manually as indeed you cannot add or change them after the reservation is made because the fields are grayed out. Bravo!

I asked the exact same question a few posts above yours. I've now taken the outward leg of the flight so here's what I determined:

1. I went to the TG ticket office at BKK when I was there for something else and asked them to add the two TK FF numbers to our reservations. The guy pushed back saying I had to contact TK. I pushed back at this clear nonsense. He then said he could only add our numbers to the TG reservation which is what I'd asked for. He tapped away. Upon leaving, I could see online that my TK Elite number had been added but the second passenger's information was unchanged. A partial success.

2. 24 hours before the departure time, I checked in online on the Thai web site. My TK Elite number was there identifying me as *A Gold and I was able to add the second passenger's TK FF number at this point before committing to the online check in. As an aside, we were able to change our seats for free at this point too to the second row of economy. We successfully checked in and were emailed links to Apple Wallet boarding passes which we used to breeze through the airport.

3. At the airport, the Thai lounge welcomed us as *A Gold to the lounge at D. We had Champagne for breakfast there (I asked at the bar for sparkling wine expecting the worst and the barman said that they'd got Champagne if that was all right - not a brand I was familiar with but it definitely said Champagne.)

4. 5 days later the TG flight is still not showing in my TK account. Let's see. According to the mileage calculator it should get us >400 points.

TL/DR: you can add it yourself on the Thai web site when you check in online but not before IME.
