And embarrassed in front of whom, I mean who would hold someone who has nothing to do with anything, responsible for an accident like this where they would feel obliged to be embarrassed? By this measure, you could argue that every car accident in Japan could be a cause of embarrassment for someone or the other who was not even involved in the accident. Seems a little absurd. And finally, what are the two possibilities for the Coast Guard pilot, death by seppuku or he is bullied to death by the general population for bringing shame and embarrassment to the country and people? Sorry if I sound antagonistic, but just trying to understand what appears to be an unsympathetic reaction to a what is clearly a tragedy.
As someone that lives in Japan and understands the nuances of the culture -- I'm supporting my wife. The Coast Guard Pilot will be tried and convicted for professional negligence -- or will commit suicide before this will occur -- either way it brings shame to the family - which here is really, really difficult... I don't expect you to understand what that means in Japan -- but this wasn't an "accident" in Japan... I don't expect Western people to underhand Eastern principles -- but don't just dismiss the differences -- because I have seen it and lived it -- and it is real.... You example of car accidents isn't relevant -- that is normal people making mistakes -- in Japan being a "Professional" has a
much higher standard -- this won't go well for him - and I honestly feel sorry for him as a mistake is a mistake -- but that's not how it works in Japan....
Japan prides itself on following rules, having he best quality, and not making these mistakes -- trust me this is a national embarrassment... Of course this is my opinion -- but history is on my side....
