Yes, I would chance it. I did it in December and it worked out fine even though we were an hour late leaving ATL. DL held the plane for us as a very large percentage of the folks on the ATL - FRA flight were destined for BOM. My experience has been if you don't take the 40 minue connection in FRA your options to BOM become a bit limited.

Try connecting via CDG. That is the preferred path. Don't know about you, but I like the Air France Business Lounge at CDG (the one just outside passport control!). Taking a shower & changing clothes there when going to / from BOM is a wonderful. The DL lounge in FRA is not nearly so nice.
