Because the outline of three seats looks different in Japanese than it does in English? I guess they could have asked at the airport to be moved together... But there are other and more peculiar points in that article. But to be fair, everything is probably a bit blury right after such an ordeal.

This is what the Japanese seat map looks like, I am sure that is generally understandable.
