I was at SFO's International Terminal this morning. I first went to the G side. The first step was to verify my phone #. Even though the Clear staff said I needed a phone # associated with my name, I used a Google Voice number. I received the text message and verified the 6-digit code. I am not sure how they are going to use this phone # in the future. Second, the kiosk took a picture of me. Finally, the staff scanned the front and back of my driver's license. She tried multiple times but the upload failed. Then I asked her to try on a different kiosk. Same thing - Gov ID verification failed. The staff thought the system was down and suggested that I try again next time.

I didn't want to go through this process again on another day, so I decided to walk to the A side. The kiosks are a bit different on the A side. The ones on the G side have covers on top of the scanners. Those on the A side don't. The staff on the A side had no trouble verifying my driver's license. A few hours later, I received an email telling me that I had been enrolled in the NextGen Identity+ system. According to the staff, this would alleviate the requirement to show ID every time (which is now the norm).

In any case, the UI flow design was intended to be streamlined, but the technology is failing big time, and I seriously doubt any real cybersecurity expert was involved.
