Sheraton Phu Quoc Long Beach Resort, Vietnam [Master Thread]

Couldn't find a tread for this place. If there is one, please merge.

This stinker converted from Vinpearl to Sheraton recently. Cliff's notes: Avoid.

Spent two nights here arriving on New Year's Day. Thoroughly underwhelming experience. The hotel is part of a multi-billion development that includes theme parks, hundreds of shophouses, fake Venetian canals, etc. 90% of shops sit empty and even during absolute high season, there was only the merest smattering of visitors roaming around. The hotel itself sits on some beachfront acreage and is surrounded by villas, ponds, palm trees, but everything is very basic and devoid of charm. The hotel building itself feels like a state-run enterprise in socialist-era Eastern Europe. In my decades of travel to SE Asia I have, of course, found myself on numerous occasions arriving to a hotel thinking, "wow, I flew 20 hours for THIS," but Sheraton Phu Quoc is really among the bottom of the barrel of disappointing hotels I've seen.

We arrived to a packed lobby. Were asked to take a seat and waited about 20 minutes to check in. At some point, were asked to come to the front desk to register. Hotel was packed, so received exactly what we booked, garden view room (which on the lower floors would be mostly trees and shrubbery, but from our floor meant: theme park view). This is of course not unexpected during peak season; in fact, we only came here because we booked late and better hotels were sold out or had sky-high rates. Our room was in poor repair: mold and mildew abounds, the flooring was cracked. Poorly cleaned, hair on the floor, an empty plastic bag in the closet. On the upside, a very nice fruit plate and chocolates awaited us. When they cleared the empty plates on the second day, some of the coffee beans used for decoration spilled and remained on the carpet right outside our door for the remainder of our stay.

The pool is huge, but there are not nearly enough loungers and umbrellas for full occupancy. Beach and ocean were clean, which was a pleasant surprise after my disgusting stay at JW Phu Quoc a few years ago. But the pool was filthy. It looked as though someone had puked into it. There are water stations around, but no cups to be found, and no refills for hours. I waded into the kid's pool and cracked a toenail on a loose tile.

The food is somewhat of a saving grace. The breakfast buffet (in lieu of points) had lots of options and everything was tasty. Downside here, they take your room number and tell you to walk in, letting you find your own table. That may be fine when the resort is empty, but can be very messy when the place is packed. We had snacks at the pool and via room service a couple times; these were generally tasty and reasonably priced. Had dinner once at the pan-Asian restaurant. It has the charm of 1989 Bucharest, with service to match. We ordered two entrees, which arrived 30 minutes apart. On the last day, had a snack at the pool before departure, and the server came with a wallet and credit card machine, asking for payment on the spot, "your deposit has run out." When we got back to the room, I checked and found that at check-in, they had blocked 2 Million VND, which seems a tad skimpy for 2 pax / 2 nights if they're really intent on cutting you off once you've reached your limit.

Overall, an extremely poor choice in SE Asia. We are at IC PQC now, which is lightyears ahead.
