It seems like maybe this requirement varies at the station level? I’ve been through ATL a few times without even being prompted to upgrade, but was required to recently on departing MDW. (Given how ATL lines have been of late, probably a good decision not to add this on.)

I think they scrapped the phone thing. I never got the email, but went to upgrade yesterday. In the process it asked for my phone number and sent me a 6 digit code.
This was my experience as well — if you hadn’t already verified your phone in advance, the kiosk did so as the first step of the process.
