Recent stay here. Some feedback:
- Has all the raw ingredients (building, facilities) to be really, really, nice, but would require some investment and refurb. As it is, it is fair for £100/night, when the rate gets up towards £200 I'd say it's overpriced.
- Rooms appear to have been partially refurbished - e.g. new USB sockets by beds, but other parts (e.g. bathrooms) are tired. On aircon: I think only the "new wing" at the back of the hotel has that. Rooms in the older part of the hotel don't seem to. To be fair there's probably only a dozen days a year you need AC in Derbyshire...
- Full breakfast still included as Platinum. Also got a couple of free drinks.
- Restaurant isn't as bad as reviews suggest! (or at least it wasn't for us!)
- The place is a maze with lots of stairs due to it being on a hillside and a mix of old and new builings. If you have limited mobility, I'd pick somewhere else.
- The golf club at the back attracts the usual crowd. The (nicest) half of the bar was "reserved for golf club members"!
- There's an extensive gym and a small pool which has a lot of kids at weekends.
Overall I would return. As others say it's a convenient location for a lot of the region, the facilities are pretty good, and the service is friendly and helpful.
