I took the ATL-FRA-BOM flight last week. DL20 then DL106 to BOM.

The gates for both the flights are next to each other (provided you are ticketed on DL metal) D5 & D8
The flights usually arrive 30 - 40 mins early which gives u enough time to make your connection. I had the same question on 45 mins being a legal connection and DL says it is.
