Maui Rental Car Travel

How silly to restrict driving beyond Hana on Maui.

I promptly drove my Alamo rental both around West Maui and around East Maui....all the way around both loops. East Maui involves exactly 4.5 miles of unpaved road past the Lindbergh grave, at which point it is followed by about 18 miles of bumpy pavement. The unpaved portion is narrow, but was well-graded, lightly traveled, and not at all dangerous at 20mph. Compare that with the danger of hitting a pothole on a paved highway at 65mph.

West Maui is paved all the way around, with a narrow one-lane portion that might be scary for some people, say from Kansas who have never seen a mountain in their life.

Both of these segments pale in comparison with 48-state locations where I have taken rental cars (try 50 miles of rough dirt roads in rural NV). In all cases, the cars were not abused and came through fine with careful handling.

Thus, I refuse to even acknowledge restrictions like that.
