I think 2 possibilities:
- either availability was showing incorrectly (and the only way to verify that is to actually complete the booking and see it through)
- or U availability is no longer enough to allow one to UG using Avios / QCredits
It turned out to the neither. After reading the Avios reward bookings thread regarding credit card payment issues, I decided to make one final attempt at upgrading through my Privilege Club Dashboard (upgrade option still greyed out in manage my booking) and making payment for the £96 fee via debit card. Imagine my surprise when the payment went straight through, avios deducted and outbound sectors now showing as U class.
