So, OP, you are not wrong. The DL Amex Plat has much less value these days and is not worth having.
It is not worth it for you but it is for others. My lovely wife and I definitely use the companion ticket and come out money ahead with the DL Platinum. And that is not counting Amex offers we might receive.

Everyone’s situation is different.

We all need to remember that, myself included.
