Sadly, there were two pets carried in the cargo hold of JL516 (not clear what species, JAL accepts "Dogs, cats, small birds, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, marmots, squirrels, chinchillas") and they were not saved:

It saddens me to think that those pets were trapped in the cargo hold while the plane burned and ultimately suffered structural collapse. Perhaps the smoke inhalation rendered them unconscious.
Moreover, this tragedy again illustrates the inherent risks of transporting pets as cargo. There have been multiple cases of pets transported in this way getting lost, misplaced, or accidentally subjected to hazardous environmental conditions.
