Award tickets are from luggage allowance perspective equal to Go Smart. So you should be fine with a standard carry on, though there has been a few reports of things looking odd for UA awards. I have not heard of anyone having issues with a standard carry on for an award ticket at the airport. Seems to be an app/website issue only.
We just flew a UA issued SK award, and the ticket receipt, website, and app all indicated that we were limited to an "underseat" bag only - no carry on. This turned out to be wrong. Check-in agent at CPH confirmed that we were entitled to a carry-on plus an underseat bag. Also no issue getting an extra bag for *A G. Two of our bags were pretty close to the 22.3 kilo limit and but the agent didn't seem to care at all.
