I can't speak to the student piece and why it wasn't verified, but the T&C say that it will renew automatically until cancelled. If they are offering any kind of refund, take it. I had looked at cancelling my membership early so I wouldn't have to worry about it, but the cancellation is immediate with no refund. So I set a reminder on my phone calendar to cancel just before the renewal date.
