I tried to use the electronic gates upon departing FRA for a non-Schengen a couple weeks before Christmas with a biometric passport and permanent residence permit, and the machine wouldn't accept it.

So I went to the manual queue. The officer said "you know you can use the gates". "I know, and it showed me an X and didn't work, so here I am......"
