I’ve done exactly what you’re trying to do with my family (Husband and 12 year old son were on one record, myself on another). You can actually do this on the website without calling. You won’t have to attach him to another adult. (Not sure why but I didn’t have to.) Also, my son actually kept my husband’s status on the upgrade list. So he actually cleared for a first class seat but I didn’t.
