As to your second paragraph, if you think that is an easy solution, you don’t understand the PR nightmare this would be for AA.
Ive been on several flights where I've witnessed the BE family split up mess. Can't offer any personal experience as I have status, but have seen it happen. Don't know when they booked tickets.
To the second point, doubt it. AA and the other majors have committed far worse sins like sending kids to the wrong destination, splitting young children due to IROPs and more. This won't be more than a blip and some teeth gnashing by a group of parents who want things for free; so exactly what we have today.
That said, if there's space, I don't have an issue with AA seating kids with their parents. Whatever method is used to avoid the situation - having kids split up is a mess for everyone, the kids, the parents and everyone else on the plane.
