That's a good point, but in such a case I'd expect that the booking for the extension is in the same name as the original booking and as you say the hotel will usually tell you that you won't get any additional benefits.
Many people in this thread when they ask about booking back to back, they are using 2 different Plat account, their own and their spouse's or partner's or whoever else is traveling with them. And then they want to one if they can get benefits for both stays/ nights given its under different names but they are after all traveling together and staying in the same room. For that Amex has put in anti-gaming language discussed in another thread.
