Yes but ....
Yes, only if there are available seats, if no available seats, then it may mean changing flights (for free) -- which could be challenging for an international connection (in a holiday season)

Yes that is an option for UA to provide E+ if seats are not occupied

Did you select seat assignments in advance? Were they changed?

If none was available at booking, with children you MUST call immediate or risk not getting adjacent seats at checkin. Never, let this slide.
UA will not involuntary move passenger to accommodate you. UA will suggest different flight options, no move passenger.
