I guess award. For revenue flights I could always book them from AA or wherever, pop in the Alaska number, and get the miles (and status?) credited back.

So I just popped a few international destinations into both Alaska and AA to experiment. To be honest the results from Alaska weren't encouraging, whereas the results from AA more closely matched the experience I'm used to with United. This makes me think that in practice I'll mostly be booking international vacations with American, which makes me wonder if I should just hop on their loyalty program instead, even if I book Alaska flights domestically...
If you are booking international business class simply book directly with the Alaska partner and credit to your Alaska account. You generally will earn as many or more miles. As far as obtaining status with AA it is all about the spend.
