Surely on the B-Z leg, you come out into Z, not A? I mean, it might look like A gates and there might be a big sign saying A but I’m guessing the doors are set so that the bus pax go into Z departures? If the bus driver lets you into A, she/he has admitted you to Schengen…

I left from Z11 and expected to be dumped back at Z11 - as did several other people on the bus, so we waited when the bus stopped in front of a gate saying A something. But we were directed to alight.
I suspect you are correct that it is not actually A, but some noman's land from which you can either go to the Z gates or through passport to get to A. But it is really confusing!
You must have arrived at AEUW (A-EU-West) which is actually gate area A7-A10 used for bus arrivals from clean non-Schengen countries such as the US and the UK. By going up two floors you are able to reach Z departure level without having to go through passport control or security.
I have managed to find AEUW marked on Frankfurt Airport’s interactive map.
