Avios availability does pop up closer to departure. I was flying J fo JFK on Monday and checked 6am yesterday morning and suddenly a F Avios option was available so arranged to move up to this (never tried the newer BA F seat). Just one random F option and I'd checked almost every day since the original J booking.
