That's why I would suggest minimizing walking on your day of arrival, especially getting to your place of staying. And for someone who never been there, navigating from Citi Hall to Esplanade with half million people around you while you rolling your suitcases - I would definitely recommend avoid doing it.
It's air conditioned pretty much the entire way until you go up the escalators to JW Marriott. Fair enough that underground walking isn't for everyone due to lack of visual landmarks, but is reasonably well signed. Switching the subway twice also involves some walking as the lines you are proposing aren't always on the opposite platform IIRC. Outside not fun, I agree, but possible if someome should prefer line of sight to JW Marriott hotel.
Anyways, each to their own. I doubt any local would think of the way you suggested, but hey, it works as well.
