So I actually heard back from Delta within 8 hours and they granted me an exemption!
Thanks for the other suggestions — they had actually shortchanged me on a VS flight that they canceled and rebooked me on BA instead, but didn’t need to dig into that. If that failed, I probably would have flown one way to another carrier’s hub and then flown back on Delta.
