Jetstar child seating

Jetstar says "We do our best to seat families together when we allocate seating and we’ll make sure that young children are seated with a parent or guardian".

I, my wife and 4yo son have just OLCId for a domestic flight. As we didn't pay for seating, expected one adult to be by themselves, and child next to the other adult.

But somehow they have put me and my wife together, and our child 7 rows away on his own.

I guess nobody will say anything if we swap after boarding, or maybe if we approach a gate agent they will do the swap officially. But how could this happen in the first place?

We didn't want to pay $21 for 3 seats but perhaps this is a ploy to see if we will pay $7 to move him now??
