I dare say the warning was both helpful AND alarming and our climb out was indeed noisy and watching on the flight map we bounced and vibrated up to just over 300 knots and 12000' (i need to check the photo I took) before the gear came up. Being a part of a maintenance procedure was definitely a first for me and my other half in our many many thousands of miles of air travel, as well as for the inflight crew we were with.
It's not that unusual, I've had it perhaps 3 or 4 times out of quite a bit of flying. The more usual reason is to help cool the undercarriage / brakes after excess heat.
