Being a part of a maintenance procedure was definitely a first for me and my other half in our many many thousands of miles of air travel, as well as for the inflight crew we were with.
It's not that unusual, I've had it perhaps 3 or 4 times out of quite a bit of flying. The more usual reason is to help cool the undercarriage / brakes after excess heat.
