More common at busy holiday times? We landed at 8:30pm, which I perceive as a pretty busy time for arrivals in general.
I’ve had a hard stand arrival at SEA off peak, too, presumably because it was a late evening arrival and a lot of gates were occupied with parked planes. Any time there are planes stuck at the gates you can end up getting bused from a remote stand.

I have been getting airport tours lately - had a long one at LAX driving in circles near TBIT after thanksgiving waiting for a gate. And just had one tonight on AA driving the perimeter of ORD because of a couple of planes were blocking the alley.
