I wonder if the differentiation is in the (extremely pedantic) details: the LCC website displays the carrier name as "AirJapan" (no space), whereas the NH and UA websites display "Air Japan" (with a space) for non-LCC NH flights operated by their subsidiary. 99% of the confusion between the two will still remain, but at least there is an extremely minor difference.
