I use the stored value card for the same reason, it’s faster. Also you can use a card you buy in one city on subways and busses in other cities as long as the card has the “China T-Union” symbol on it, which they all seem to have. I’ve used my Shanghai transit card in Suzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing and I think Shenzhen with no issues.
