I've left the airport on layovers in places like Singapore and Dubai, and in European cities on ex-EU trips where I've arrived in the morning for an afternoon/evening departure. But, knowing how unreliable London transport is at the moment, and expensive too, I probably wouldn't risk it at Heathrow, unless it was going to be my only opportunity to visit London for a while.
