I have *G and am travelling with a companion. The price difference is about 200NZD, which I think of as a dinner bill which I’m happy to spend on, any day as long as it’s worth my money.

Granted PE menu is like BP, just without PDB, amuse bouche, and 1 less appetiser/dessert to choose from, I think they are similar.

I don’t care for amenity kits. I don’t need the extra baggage. I get lounge access via *G anyway. Wifi is free for everyone. The noise cancelling headsets are just as poor in both classes.

I am not sure if the J seat is good for 2 travelling together or a pair of PE seats work better. Besides J doesn’t get bedding trans Tasman. On the other hand, J is still J after all.

The mileage earning different is negligible between both classes and I regularly clear the FFP renewal threshold by a large margin.

what would you opt for?
I have done Trans Tasman in J numerous times, and I avoid the v1 787 if at all possible. The seats are tight, even for very small people like us. The seats in PE are better, and a better experience as a couple. The food is mediocre anyway, and no amenity kits on these flights, the paper bag kits are not worth having anyway. And in J you don't get off the plane first. So all in all, I would suggest PE, which is a sad indictment on the airline.
