In my positive experience, you should approach the SQ ticketing / customer service desk before checking in and explain the situation and to the extent there is availability and maybe the fare class is available on your preferred flight, they may accommodate you.
However, as others have stated, it should not be a 100% expectation that they accommodate the request and they are under no obligation to do so.
I’ll need to check-in again even though the SQ segment is on the same ticket? I thought I just need to check-in with UA?
