P.S. This problem isn't unique to Marriott. IIRC Hilton has a similar restriction on qualifying stays. Not sure on IHG nor Hyatt.

It is pretty much a universal rule across most major hotel loyalty programs, incl IHG and Hyatt. In fact if you dont book thru Hyatt, I believe that you dont get free airport shuttle at some Hyatt Place international airport location.
