Apple's advantage is that Airtag-relay reporting on nearby devices is aut-enabled on Apple devices so if your tag is near any iPhone 7 or newer, that phone can (and almost certainly will) track its location. This makes the pool of tracking relays extremely large, certainly larger than any similar opt-in system.
