Not yet. But it's close. Gosho Gekkoju, Bettei Senjuan and Shinsen could easily be in the Top 10 - it depends on what you're looking for. And Mrs. KI-NRT and I don't entirely share the same tastes - for instance, she says that her best meal ever was at Hiiragiya, whereas I fail to remember too many of the dishes that were served (without looking back at the photos - I take one of each and every serving.) Do you prioritize a view, or things to do in the area, or the best and most authentic Onsen, or easy access to Tokyo? Or hard product or cuisine or a tranquil garden or English-speaking staff? Very few ryokans tick every single box for every traveler.
What I do know: Myoken Ishiharaso is even more firmly in my personal Top 10. We're currently here, and the food was AMAZING. Service is friendly, refined and oh so accommodating. English, French, Korean and Chinese-speaking staff (at least.) Quite possibly the very best Onsen from a technical sense (more on that when I get around to a full review.) Rurimurasaki (the top room, and one we finally got to try) is incredible. Four other rooms were recently rebuilt earlier this year, and are modern but
unmistakably Japanese. Clement is still there and is as awesome as ever.
By the way, my top 10 is a result of a small sample size. There are still tons of places to check out. And there seem to be new ryokans popping up every single day. Just in Yufuin (IMO, the king of high-end ryokans from a pure numbers standpoint) has had 4 new properties open in just the past few years, and another 3 that I have been encouraged to visit by numerous acquaintances. There's a killer single-villa ryokan in Aizu Wakamatsu (Fukushima) called
Aizu Tsuruga Higashiyama Sohonzan. While Kyoto is not known for having much in the way of Onsen, Kameoka (a neighboring town) has a luxury ryokan called
Kyo Yunohana Resort Suisen that has amazing Onsen and food, according to KI-NRT's mother. We're looking to try to book the Suisen Suite sometime this Spring.
Yado Shiontei in Tottori Prefecture was recently (heavily) renovated and looks awesome. And next Christmas we've earmarked
Onyado Chikurintei (Takeo Onsen in Saga Prefecture),
Ryotei Hanzuiryo (Unzen, Nagasaki - definitely a Suite),
Enowa Yufuin (Oita) and
Sanso Tensui in Hita, Oita Prefecture. Atami supposedly have some killer ryokans, but we just don't see it as a great destination spot - but there might be one or two ryokans that might be worth visiting just for the experience at the ryokan itself. Who knows. And that's still just scratching the surface.
