Some heads up. The situation has not changed. It looks like European properties (and particularly MGallery, did not see that beyond Europe) that have a "Complimentary Breakfast during Weekends" rate do not want to provide free breakfasts if you have not booked the specific rate. That's great, except that like it was hinted to me in the quote, these rates are time/inventory bound. They eventually disappear and check-in staff are training to tell you you should have booked the particular rate.
While they do have specific "complimentary weekend breakfast" rates, according to the Terms and Conditions, you don't have to select such a rate to be eligible. You should still get the free breakfast, by requesting such upon check-in. That's still a completely stupid process, but you should still be entitled to the breakfast, by requesting it thusly.
