I had two small airport locations recently that texted me on the rental day with special instructions.

One had a lockbox at the counter for Avis Preferred late night pickups with a code. One had a particular drawer behind the counter with the key.

I'm willing to bet it was to cut down on overtime, since in the past, when the rep had to wait for my arrival, they were happy to get the extra pay for sitting there waiting.
