I’d recommend having a read about BAEC in the guides on here. Like every programme, there are some good uses and some bad uses of your Avios.

If you really want to avoid fees, either fly shorthaul on BA or other airlines with your Avios. That said, there are other sweet spots which do have taxes and fees but where it’s still very worthwhile (the multi carrier awards can be powerful when you’re able to get one booked).
