One thing I have tried is a real eye mask, not the ones from the amenity kit but one designed to hold the mask off your eyes so you can open them while wearing the mask and it's still pitch black. I've only had a chance to use it once so far and I think it did work. I was able to refuse the meal and go to sleep while the lights were still on, something I rarely manage. The ones I bought were the mantasleep.com mask, just the base model.

First CS flight last month I tried this. Easy enough. Not sure if anyone got an eyeful they shouldn't have done, but I was much happier avoiding the bathroom floor (I don't use disposable slippers for environmental reasons so previously had the extra joy of taking off and putting back on my shoes).
