Is January busy at the hotel? In the Australia forum, I've been advised going there do to the heat and humidity this time of year.
So I originally booked a Garden View King but was upgraded to a Lagoon View King with direct access to the Lagoon. By the way the Lagoon is actually a pool and not an actual traditional Lagoon in that sense. They did not have any additional upgrades to offer me during my stay but I felt the value that I spent $250AUD per night was well worth it for my two night stay in Port Douglas. Breakfast buffet was adequate with plenty of cold and hot options as well as some asian options to cater to the influx of Japanese tourists.

I would highly recommend visiting Hatley's Croc Adventures and do a Port Douglas River Cruise while you're there. I did both of these and then the SkyRail and the Kunara train back to Cairns which was an interesting experience too.

Anyone use the hotel car service (if there is one)? Sometimes it helps get the nicer upgrade.

It seems like to get to town, a car isn't needed as there are shuttles and Uber, please advise if you think a car is needed. (I might rent one just for a day to explore).
I didn't think that a car was needed but Port Douglas is a hour north of Cairns and you'd most likely miss out on visiting Hatley's... I didn't get charged for parking when I stayed at the Sheraton btw.
